Protected Status
Single Malt Welsh Whisky now holds PGI (Protected Geographical Indication) status, standing alongside Scotch Whisky and Irish Whiskey as a protected spirit.
It means what's in the bottle is guaranteed: made in Wales, to a defined standard, under a name that can't be borrowed or imitated.
Penderyn are proud to have led the campaign to secure it.
Understanding PGI
PGI status protects the names of products from specific geographical locations within the UK. Protected products include Scotch Whisky, Stilton Cheese and Jersey Royal Potatoes.
A PGI ties a product's quality and reputation to where it's made, and guarantees it meets a defined standard.
PGI status protects producers and consumers alike, guarding against counterfeits, misrepresentation and false claims.
Single Malt Welsh Whisky is the first UK spirit and the first Welsh spirit to achieve this status. It highlights Welsh food and drink producers and promotes Wales on a global stage.
The application was led by four Welsh distilleries: Penderyn, In the Welsh Wind, Da Mhile and Coles.
The label should clearly state 'Single Malt Welsh Whisky' in full. If it doesn't, the product's quality and standard aren't verified under PGI.
Yes. There are 20 items on the Welsh GI list, including Anglesey Sea Salt PDO, PGI Welsh Beef, Welsh Leeks PGI and Traditional Welsh Caerphilly PGI.
